View Full Version : Help viewing raw memory

Hi,

I'm having a hard time figuring out how to view a chunk of raw memory in the way that is shown in your docs at this link:
http://www.etnus.com/Documentation/latest/html/wwhelp/wwhimpl/api.htm?href=User_Guide/User_Guide-13.html

Basically, I attach to a running process that has no debug symbols compiled into it (its a fully optimized production release executable for example). I know the address and size for the memory block I want to view. From what I've read, I need to click View->Lookup Variable then enter the address range seperated by a comma in the Variable field. I do that and sure I can see the memory but the display is ugly and not configurable. In the above link, it says you can click View->Examine Format->Raw to get output similar to what "od" would show me - that's exactly what I want, but there is no "Examine Format" in my View menu. Is it because I'm not looking at a particular variable? How can I do this?

I'm using 7.1.1-1 on AIX 5.2.0.0 64bit.

Thanks,
Dan Behman

Dan,

You'll need at least TV 7.3 for this feature:

TV 7.3.0-0 FCS, June, 2006
New Features
Memory Dump
. New "Examine Format" and "Block Status" commands within the Variable
Window let you directly see the exact memory contents in a manner
similar to that used by the "od" shell command. In addition, TotalView
can label the memory to give you additional information.

See http://www.etnus.com/Documentation/latest/pdf/new_features.pdf
page 8 of 14 (labeled page 4).
